There is nothing quite like walking in the woods alone, in winter. I love the stillness, as though your breath is the only thing moving. Tang of dying leaves and soft sunlight. Clean footsteps and crisp cold air. These woods can be found between Pocklington Beck and the town itself, and can be accessed via a public footpath that leads you right up onto the Wolds above the Vale of York. The views in all directions are stunning and you can go for miles along the Wolds Way, parts of which are an ancient paths used as far back as 15th century to move between towns and villages. They were so atmospheric, I wanted to share them with you here on New Year’s Eve so that you could walk with me as well.
The candy cane house… I almost lived here once!
My favourite stream to stand and listen to it gurgle by.
Onwards back up the hill to the eerie scene of golfers playing in the mist.
The textures of soggy leaves, unthawed frost, and icy droplets from nearby trees were honestly so amazing.
My boot got in here!
Unthawed ice on the way to Kilnwick Percy – a country estate turned Buddhist centre that is open to the public! Check it out here.
The house itself.
A path of ice leading me home.
My walk was so long the stars began to set in!
A Happy New Year to you, One & All!
