The Queens Hotel, Leeds

Four months ago, I sat in a psychiatrist’s room in a hospital in Leeds I was dreading going to but actually turned out to be calm and healing with a lovely soothing energy and kind staff. I received the diagnosis I was always 90% sure I had anyway ~ Schizoaffective Disorder like my dad, with OCD. β€œWe have comorbidity,” the psychiatrist said gently, β€œSo both can be true at the same time.” I felt a wave of relief. At least I know.

The oracle card I pulled when I first moved to Leeds

We chatted through treatment plans in the Autumn when all the leaves in the hospital grounds were turning golden and green and yellow and red, I know now that just like Winter ends, so will this time in my life ~ so will this cycle, this season, just as sure as Spring will come. It will burst through like the daffodils just coming into bud outside my kitchen window…

Statues in City Square

These pictures were taken in the late and very early months of the year when everything around us seems dead and dying, but there is a sharpness to them, a poignancy as though the frigid air heightens the resolution somehow.

And yet the bare black branches on the trees remind us that this is a time for resting as Winter sleeps…

When I moved to Leeds on 6th November 2022, the belated Bonfire Night firework displays lit up the sky in purples and bright sparkly glitter across the valley. I curled up on the sofa with my first cup of tea in the new house and watched the candles flickering that I had brought with me from London, a tranquil temporary oasis surrounded by bags and boxes.

Venturing out that Christmas for my first real exploration of the city, it was here my love for just walking through Leeds really comes from. Since then, I have gathered pictures of some of my favourite buildings and architecture you can find around the city and offer them to you here in a little scrapbook, a compendium if you will or vision board for your next trip.

If you are in a Winter time in your life, know that a new season can sometimes strangely be worth the suffering and strife…
